American Fifth Spirits is Lansing’s first distillery. Ever. We take pride in using local ingredients to make inventive, hand-crafted spirits of remarkable quality.
American Fifth Spirits started to come together in 2009. Unfortunately, during the Great Recession, none of the banks were willing to help. So, the idea laid dormant for a few years. Eventually, the economy improved and the craft spirits industry matured. In 2013, the idea was rekindled. Over the following months opening Lansing’s first distillery began to take shape. We found the perfect location in the Stadium District. We waited through the government shutdown of 2013. We maneuvered getting all the proper permits. Finally, after many months of renovation, we opened our Tasting Room and Distillery in April 2015, and haven’t looked back. Our menu includes Signature Cocktails, developed by our awesome staff. These cocktails change on the 5th of each month, so, there is always something new to try!
Head Distiller and President, Rick Wyble, is building on his extensive experience in the wine industry. He has earned the following designations: Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) and Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS.) He learned the craft of distilling by attending the Artisan Distilling Seminar through Michigan State University. Rick followed up this initial education by attending the Craft Spirits Technology Workshop at Siebel Institute in Chicago. The fruits of his creativity and labor are now available for the world’s sipping pleasure!
- We unleashed HUE Vodka in November 2014. Using locally grown soft Red Winter Wheat, our HUE Vodka represents the flavor sensations from the best parts of the vodka spectrum.
- Fat Five White Whiskey was released in August of 2015. Welcome to the new age of whiskey! Fat Five is white whiskey made from the finest grain our state has to offer. Locally sourced and bottled for a unique taste that can only be found in Michigan agriculture.
- Our Capital Gin was released in November of 2015. We start with seven botanicals: juniper, ginger, lemon peel, lemon thyme, pink peppercorn, cardamom, and angelica. Each are distilled separately to carefully control the intensity of flavor. We painstakingly blend them to create a unique & remarkable gin profile. We think it’s capital! We hope you do, too.
